Health systems are under immense pressure from the burden of chronic disease and injury and the increasing costs of healthcare are quickly becoming unsustainable. Health system research has a critical role to play in addressing this problem by helping identify affordable models of healthcare and innovative approaches to the treatment and management of disease. Public health programs and policies should be organized, financed, and delivered in ways that maximize population health impact, cost-effectiveness, and health equity.
